Why are candles so popular?

Candles are perhaps one of the most enjoyable and affordable luxury items available to everyone.  They are beautiful and magical, infusing the home with color and fragrance.  They can create a special warmth and ambiance to bring a special sense of calm and well-being.

Are Crafted Candles taper candles drip-less and smokeless?

Our tapers are made to be drip-less and smoke-less, however, any candle can drip or smoke if not used correctly.  Before initial use, trim wick to 1/4" inch long. Taper wick will self consume as it burns, thus it will only need to be trimmed on initial use. A 4" X 3/4" beeswax strip is included in each of our Taper cartons. If the base of your taper is too small for your candleholder, wrap the provided beeswax strip around the base of the candle, this will provide a snug fit in the holder. Never use glue to steady a taper or any other flammable substance near a taper while burning it.  If the candle base is too large, warm the base of the candle with hot water and while wax is still warm, carefully trim a layer of wax with a knife. Or use our Taper Shaver to smoothly trim the base of the taper.  Gently fit candle into holder. Most importantly, burning a taper in a steady draft may cause the flame to smoke and tapers to drip. These tapers are formulated for a quick recovery once removed from the draft.

What does “Cigar Banded” tapers mean?

Most of our standard tapers are sold in pairs or boxed.  A single pair can be “Cigar Banded”.  “Cigar Banded” means that they are banded together as a pair but not packaged in a box.  We wrap them carefully for shipping.

What causes a candle to burn unevenly?

The most common cause is again, a draft.  Another reason could be that the holder is not on a level surface and the taper is not centered and straight.

What is the best way to burn a pillar candle?

Keep wick trimmed to 1/4" inch long. This helps regulate the flame height and can reduce smoking. A short wick produces a small, more controlled flame and will not emit smoke, as an oversized flame will produce. The pure cotton wick allows pillar to burn slowly and evenly while providing a soft illuminating glow. To get the full benefit of the candle, let candle burn for at least 3 hours on initial use. This avoids candle tunneling and will provide the candle a burn path and allow for an even burn. Burning a pillar in a draft may cause the flame to smoke or candle to drip. Pillars are formulated for a quick recovery once removed from the draft. For optimum burn in a hurricane lamp, leave a 1" clearance between glass and candle. Three Wick Pillar Tip: Do not burn longer than 4 hours at a time.

How should a votive burn and what is the best way to clean a votive holder?

Always place votives in an enclosed container. Votive candles will liquefy when burned so should never be burned outside of an enclosed container.   Before you slip a votive candle into a votive cup or holder, drop a teaspoon of water into the cup. This way, when you want to remove the votive candle to replace it with another, the candle should slide out easily. Check periodically to make sure there is ample water remaining in the holder.

What type of wicks are used in candles from Crafted Candles?

Only100% cotton wicks are used.

Are certain candle waxes better than others?

No. All types of quality candle waxes have been shown to burn cleanly, safely and in the same manner. U.S. candle manufacturers select waxes or blends of waxes based on their suitability for specific types of candles or formulation profiles, as well as their own candle-making preferences.

Is my candle biodegradable?

Probably.  Studies have shown that beeswax, paraffin and vegetable-based waxes are biodegradable.

Should I be concerned about lead wicks in candles?

No.  The likelihood of purchasing a lead-wicked candle in the U.S. is very low.  Lead wicks have been officially banned in the United States since 2003, and before then they were primarily limited to inexpensive imported candles.  NCA candle manufacturers voluntarily agreed to not use lead wicks in 1974, and long supported the elimination of lead wick use.

Why do some candles have metal-core wicks?

Metal-core wicks are sometimes used in container candles and votives to keep the wick upright when the surrounding wax liquefies during burning.  Today’s metal-core wicks are made with either zinc or tin.  Scientific studies have repeatedly shown both zinc- and tin-core wicks to be safe and non-toxic.

Does wrapping a candle in cellophane or foil and putting it in the refrigerator or freezer make the candle burn longer?

Yes and no.  It’s true that a cold candle will burn more slowly than one that’s room temperature.  But it only takes a few minutes for the heat from the flame to warm a very cold candle to room temperature.  The few extra minutes of burn time that you might get from putting a candle in the refrigerator isn’t much and probably isn’t worth the effort or the refrigerator space!

How do I remove candle wax from carpet or fabric or wood surface?

After the wax has hardened, carefully remove the larger pieces of wax (be sure to use a dull object if working on a wood surface).  Place a clean paper towel or soft rag over the wax spill.  Using an iron on a low setting or a blow dryer on its lowest heat setting, and warm the paper towel or cloth. The wax will begin to melt and soak up into the towel or cloth.  Blot wax and repeat as necessary until the wax is removed.

What can I do too keep my candles from fading in color?

You should always store your candles in a cool, dry place and out of direct sunlight.  We suggest you wrap them in tissue to store.  Taper candles should be stored flat to prevent warping.

What can I do to fix a candle flame that is too low?

This usually happens when a candle has burned for more hours than normal.  Melted wax will reduce the length of the exposed wick.  Blow out the candle and carefully pour out a small amount of wax and relight.  Carefully expose more of the wick by digging out a little of the wax around the wick.  This should allow the candle flame to burn higher.

How do I remove wax from my candle holder?

After the holder cools, place it in your freezer for 10 to 15 minutes to let the wax harden.  The wax should easily pop out.  If not, then use hot water to dissolve the wax.

What is the best way to clean my candles?

With a dry or damp soft cloth.
